Eight Further ERC Grants Awarded to EPFL
Published:13.08.09 — Although the final results have not yet been issued, eight young EPFL scientists have just heard that they are to be awarded an ERC Starting Grant – great news for the start of the 2009-2010 academic year! ERC (the European Research Council) is a structure established in 2005 to complement the funding activities of other classical European agencies. It supports fundamental or applied research programmes in two different categories: ERC Starting Grants for young investigators and ERC Advanced Grants.
Christoph Frei to Head the World Energy Council
Published:12.08.09 — For the first time ever, a Swiss national is taking up the position of Secretary General of the World Energy Council (WEC). A Professor at the EPFL Energy Systems Management Chair, over the past eight years Christoph Frei has concurrently been working at the World Economic Forum as Senior Director for energy security, anticorruption and climate change.

Published:10.07.09 — Professor Jean-Yves Le Boudec, his PhD student Nikodin Ristanovic and Mr. Augustin Chaintreau from Thomson Laboratories received the Best Paper Award for their research “The Age of Gossip: Spatial Mean Field Regime” at ACM Sigmetrics 2009.
Collaboration between IMT and BrightView Systems
Published:07.07.09 — The Thin-Film Photovoltaics Laboratory at IMT, a world leading lab in silicon-based thin-film solar cells research, part of the renowned Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and BrightView Systems, an innovative developer of production process optimization tools for the solar industry are joining forces to introduce novel solutions for the optimization of next generation thin-film solar cells production.
The James H. Wilkinson Prize to Assyr Abdulle
Published:23.06.09 — Professor Assyr Abdulle (Chair of Computational Mathematics and Numerical Analysis at EPFL) has been awarded by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics the James H. Wilkinson Prize in numerical analysis and scientific computing for "outstanding contributions in a broad range of fields, including stability analysis and mathematical software for stiff initial value problems, efficient solution algorithms for stochastic differential equations, and error analysis of hetergeneous multiscale methods".
Motilis Medica wins W.A. de Vigier Foundation Prize
Published:19.06.09 — The oldest and most generous prize for young Swiss entrepreneurs was awarded June 18 in Soloturn: the W.A. De Vigier Foundation recognized five young entrepreneurs for their forward-looking projects. They each received starting capital of 100,000 CHF. One of these prizes was won by the Lausanne Company Motilis Medica SA, whose CEO and co-founder, Vincent Schlageter, is a member of EPFL's Signal Processing Laboratory. His innovation: a pill which transforms itself into a "special agent" in the digestive system to pinpoint GI tract problems. Read the Press release (French).
