Workshop explores similarities between cities and natural systems
The workshop "Form and Function of Complex Systems" was held at EPFL on 13-15 September.
The workshop has stimulated fascinating discussions on transport, metabolism, and scaling in natural and urban systems. The first day, chaired by Prof. Gabriele Manoli (EPFL URBES) has focused on cities with exciting talks by Diego Rybski (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), Marc Barthelemy (Institute of Theoretical Physics, Saclay), and Caterina de Bacco (Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems) while the second day, chaired by Prof. Sara Bonetti (EPFL CHANGE), was devoted to natural and biological systems, with the contributions of Kaare Jensen (Technical University of Denmark), Daniel Rothman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Lida Kanari (EPFL), and Mario Putti (University of Padova). The seminars covered a variety of topics (from road and railway networks, to rivers, plants, neurons, and optimal transport theories), stimulating vibrant discussions across disciplinary boundaries.
