Workshop at AMLD 2026: Designing Responsible AI Tools for Education

CEDE will host a hands-on workshop at Applied Machine Learning Days (AMLD) 2026 focused on the responsible design of AI tools for education, with a particular emphasis on LLM-powered chatbot tutors.
Titled “Designing responsible AI tools for education: the case of LLM-powered chatbot tutors”, the workshop will take place on 12 February 2026, from 09:00 to 12:30, and will combine practical activities with evidence-based insights from learning sciences and AI ethics.
Participants will explore how generative AI tools—often deployed to reduce response time and staff workload—can be designed to genuinely support student learning. Research shows that students learn more effectively when they actively engage in cognitive work, for instance through well-designed hints rather than direct answers. Building on CEDE’s experience at EPFL, the workshop will showcase different pedagogical chatbot designs that translate these principles into practice.
Beyond pedagogy, the workshop will address the technical challenges of deploying LLM-powered tutors in real educational settings. Participants will experiment hands-on with CEDE’s infrastructure to understand how chatbots can be adapted to different document types (e.g. lectures versus exams), question categories (administrative versus disciplinary), and disciplinary needs.
The session will also place strong emphasis on ethical considerations. While privacy concerns and hallucination issues are widely discussed, other issues—such as the environmental impact, and the effects on teaching roles—are often overlooked. Participants will be guided through structured approaches to identify, evaluate, and mitigate these risks, using concrete examples drawn from CEDE’s deployed tools.
This workshop is designed for educators, instructional designers, researchers, and AI practitioners interested in building responsible, pedagogically sound AI systems for education.
