With the return of summer and its periods of high heat, it is important to adapt work activities and take several measures that can reduce their impact. Please find below a selection of possible measures:

Ventilation and cooling of the working areas

  • Take advantage of the night cooling to refresh the working zones.
  • If possible, open windows partially (in imposte) during the night and open them widely once you are present at the beginning of the day.
  • Encourage air movement by creating drafts, for example by opening opposite windows.
  • Close windows and blinds during the day, before the arrival of direct sun.
  • Reduce indoor heat sources, e.g. by turning off lights, computer equipment and any machines that are not absolutely necessary.

Reducing the effects of heat

  • Drink sufficient water regularly before the effects of heat appear (thirst, dry mouth, headaches, dizziness, muscle cramps).
  • Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.
  • Eat cold and light meals.
  • Choose lighter clothing.

Adjustment of work

  • In agreement with your manager, adapt your professional activity and working times. For example: starting earlier in the morning, taking advantage of flexible working hours, or by planning recovery breaks in cooler areas (15 minutes every hour).
  • Schedule physically demanding activities during the cooler morning hours.
  • If possible, increase the time spent in cooler areas.

Pay attention to body signals

  • Special attention should be given to people at risk or vulnerable, such as pregnant women, nursing mothers, young employees and the elderly.
  • Pregnant women can assert their right to withdraw from work at a temperature of 28°C or above.
  • Pay particular attention to all laboratory activities, even light ones! At elevated temperatures, even people in good health may be at risk if they have to wear protective equipment. The quality of the breaks is important when conducting physically demanding tasks, even in areas provided with air-conditioning.

In case of dizziness, headaches, exhaustion, nausea and/or vomiting, do not hesitate to contact the EPFL emergency number 115 or 021 693 30 00.

We wish you a very nice Summer !
