The UPCYCLING teaching unit, part of the axis « Integrated Design, Architecture and Sustainability (IDEAS) », carried out an architectural visit to the Collège du Cossy in Nyon. This excursion resonates with the issues addressed in the course, which is dedicated to the interdisciplinary design of a temporary sports facility.

The UPCYCLING teaching unit focuses on the integration of sustainability questions into architectural design, with special attention to savings in resources. Dedicated to the interdisciplinary design of a temporary sports facility, it brings together around twenty EPFL students supervised by lecturers from the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST), the Laboratory of Integrated Performance in Design (LIPID) and the Structural Xploration Lab (SXL).

The teaching unit will center around this issue of finding balance between meeting needs and saving resources, focusing on the design of a temporary architectural object. More specifically, the students will be asked to design a temporary sports facility, integrating recycled elements, satisfying users’ comfort requirements and managing the ecological load induced by their projects.

It is in this spirit that the visit to the Collège du Cossy in Nyon, designed by Itten+Brechbühl, was organized. This school and sports complex includes a primary school with after-school care, an indoor swimming pool, and a multi-purpose gymnasium, and notably incorporates a large timber structure for the gymnasium and pool areas.
