Organised jointly by the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) and the architecture, urban planning and design journal Hochparterre, the vernissage of the thematic booklet Solaris #03 took place on June, 25th 2019 at the Forum d’architectures de Lausanne (f'ar).

At a time when the energy transition has become a priority challenge, special emphasis is placed on Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Entitled “Solaris #03: La peau de la maison” ("The skin of the house"), the last thematic booklet by Hochparterre, published with support from SuisseEnergie, presents the latest technological and esthetical innovations in the field of solar envelopes.

For a long time, the expression “building skin” has passed into engineers and architects everyday speech around the world. But what is the skin’s metaphor worth for a residential building? The thematic booklet explores the architectural potential of active facades, through interviews with several personnalities including Jacques Herzog from Herzog & Meuron and Paul Kalkhoven from Foster + Partners. The publication also includes the presentation of research works conducted by Prof. Emmanuel Rey (LAST), Dr. Sophie Lufkin (LAST), Prof. Christophe Ballif (PV-Lab) and Dr. Laure-Emmanuelle Perret-Aebi (PV-Lab) within the PV2050 interdisciplinary research project, part of the National Research Programme "Energy Turnaround" (NRP 70) of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

Around a roundtable discussion and three lectures by Laure-Emmanuelle Perret-Aebi (Compáz / PV-Lab), Raffael Graf (Bauart) and Sophie Lufkin (LAST), the vernissage event was the occasion to exchange on the issues related to the architectural integration of these promising technologies and to explore new avenues in this strategic field.
