The rapid development of AI-powered tools can significantly enhance research efficiency and funding while opening up entirely new avenues for scientific discovery. Although AI can be a valuable asset in drafting research proposals, it is crucial to recognize the challenges and limitations inherent in its use.

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) published the following statement on the use of AI in proposals being submitted under the SNSF funding schemes:

"The SNSF welcomes researchers harnessing the potential of AI for their work. However, when submitting funding proposals, the underlying principle remains that researchers who use AI for their work are wholly responsible for the results produced. The basic principles of scientific integrity also apply to the use of AI. To maintain the confidentiality of the applications submitted to the SNSF, the guidelines for reviewers and referees have been adapted. Producing summaries or translations of whole application dossiers or of novel ideas using generative AI tools may violate this confidentiality. Such data must not be passed on to unauthorised third parties, including the providers of AI applications."

Researchers thus remain responsible for the results that they achieve with AI. Moreover, to maintain confidentiality and scientific integrity, the SNSF guidelines for reviewers have been adjusted.

To address complex issues arising from violations of these principles and to detect plagiarism and conduct relevant proceedings, the SNSF has set up its own Research Integrity Commission and Plagiarism Control Group.

The European Commission published the first version of The "Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research" in March 2024 to provide a framework to guide the ethical and effective use of AI in scientific research. These guidelines emphasize accountability, transparency, respect, and honesty in AI use, urging researchers and organizations to ensure data integrity, respect privacy, and uphold intellectual property rights. The recommendations are designed to support researchers, research organizations, and funding bodies in responsibly integrating generative AI into their practices while adhering to existing legal and ethical standards. The guidelines will be regularly updated to adapt to technological advancements and feedback from stakeholders.

EPFL encourages the use of generative AI across our range of activities in an informed, responsible and transparent manner. To best exploit this potential, some recommendations are in order.

A key principle is always remember to remain critical when using these tools.
