The International Conference on Urban Growth and the Circular Economy was organized on 8-10th May 2018 in Alicante, Spain. On this occasion, Judith Drouilles, PhD student at the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) presented some issues of her doctoral research dedicated to the sustainability transition of peri-urban neighborhoods of single-family houses by 2050. This work is part of the Living Peripheries research project, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

The 2018 Urban Growth Conference is the first edition of a new series of conferences on topics related to urban growth and the circular economy. It was organized by the Wessex Institute and the University of Alicante. The conference aims at supporting discussion about the multiple impacts of urban growth, especially related to the issues of energy transition, water, waste, and transport management, also connecting the aspects of density and well-being.

As a contribution to these significant issues, the Living Peripheries research project focuses on peri-urban residential neighborhoods of single-family houses as an emblematic figure of urban growth processes of the last decades. This research evaluates the capacity of these types of neighborhoods to engage towards the sustainability transition by 2050 in Switzerland. Relying on a research by design method, several theoretical scenarios are tested on existing case studies. A multi-criteria assessment allows the comparison of overall results and the proposition of future adaptation paths towards a sustainability transition of peri-urban residential neighborhoods.
