Maléna joins the SXL this January 2021 as a postdoctoral researcher for the FNS project on the reuse potential of architectural components in the Swiss building stock. Malena’s research interest covers the preservation and strengthening of existing structures as well as sustainable and circular solutions for the construction industry.

Malena received her civil engineering degree and master of applied science from Polytechnique Montréal, in Canada. She then successfully pursued her doctoral degree at EPFL at the Laboratory for Maintenance and Safety of Structures where she studied strengthening of existing reinforced concrete slabs using a layer of ultra high-performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). The aim of this technique is to preserve existing structures by protecting and strengthening them rather than demolishing.

From 2016 to 2020, she worked as project leader, structural and civil engineer at the planning office INGPHI SA, in Lausanne. There, she contributed to major construction project, from pre-design phase to construction site supervision. She was involved in bridge projects as well as large building projects. Among others, she worked on the construction project of two new museums (Elysée et mudac) in Lausanne where various construction techniques were used, from demolition, to excavation works and complex steel and concrete construction.
