Researchers from the Structural Xploration Lab have collaborated with Zirkular and the Zürich Hochbaudepartment to assess the component reuse potential of load-bearing concrete in the 'Zürich Stadtspital Triemli Personalhäuser' buildings, buildings whose future is currently reimagined.
In Fall 2021, Julie Devènes and Maléna Bastien Masse, with help from Célia Küpfer and Corentin Fivet (SXL), produced a report that assesses the structural feasibility of cutting and reusing reinforced concrete from the Triemli buildings. The open-access report follows a custom-made protocol with actions ranging from archived material searchs, to insitu visual assessment of material degradation, destructive and non-destructive mechanical testing, and potential reuse applications.
A brainstorming workshop was organized later on by Charlotte Bofinger and Kerstin Mueller (Zirkular) in December 2021, where city representatives, architects, engineers, contractors, and researchers from SXL explored together the means and solutions to effectively reuse the concrete pieces from Triemli. A report of the workshop is about to be published by Zirkular.
Both reports have since then been provided to selected design teams who participate in the competition for the new Recyclingzentrum Juch-Areal building in Zürich, in an effort to have the teams include reused concrete pieces in their design proposals.
On Monday May 30th, Maléna Bastien Masse and Jonas Warmuth (SXL) were giving a talk to the same selected design teams. While Maléna Bastien Masse gave an overview of the reuse potential report, Jonas Warmuth introduced Phoenix3D, a Grasshopper plugin for automated design with reused structural components.
