The Rolex Learning Center – a Japanese theater!

The Swiss-Japanese Circle is organizing, in cooperation with EPFL’s Cultural and Artistic Affairs department, an event that will allow everyone to discover a form of Japanese traditional theater – Kyôgen.

You don’t need to be Japanese to take part in this evening event on December 7 ! A brief introduction to Kyôgen will be followed by a series of examples commented by the actors themselves. After the intermission, two plays will be performed, and explanations projected like sub-titles to enable the audience to follow the action. Since the event will take place in the Rolex Learning Center – designed by renowned Japanese architects – the audience will really soak up the atmosphere and be transported to the land of the rising sun!

A FEW WORDS ABOUT KYOGEN

Kyôgen is to the Nô form of theater what the medieval farce or the zany sketch is to tragedy – a unique moment of enjoyment and relaxation. In the form of simple and often caricatural sketches , it presents scenes from daily life from the angle of comedy and satire. Kyôgen is almost unknown to western culture, in contrast to Nô or Kabuki. However, it’s interesting because it reveals unfamiliar aspects of traditional Japanese culture – funny and rather wacky – which is undergoing a genuine renaissance in that country.
