The LAST animates the sixth-form student days

From 8th to 16th March, the sixth-form students’ days were held on the EPFL campus, which allow secondary school students to discover various sections of the school. From now on, the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) is in charge of this event for the Section of Architecture. The activities offered have allowed near 200 participants to become more familiar not only with the modalities relevant to architectural studies, but also with the specific issues of the profession.

On the first day, partly common to all the sections, the participants coming from Switzerland and France were able to discover the campus and get to know the general aspects in relation with the courses offered by EPFL. The second day was devoted to an internship immersion in the chosen section. In order to offer an introduction to the world of architecture, the formula set up by the LAST was close to the teaching method such as applied all along the studies : learning by doing.

Thus, during the morning, the participants were able to carry out a practical exercise, based on the realization of a plan, a section and a perspective. This exercise allowed them for the first time to get the feeling of the type of work undertaken in a studio and to skim through fundamental subjects that preoccupy the architect: notions of space, of construction and of representation.

In the afternoon, Professor Emmanuel Rey gave a conference illustrating the issues and practical details of an architectural project. The exercises done during the morning were then subject to a brief critic in front of the audience, according to the practice in the architectural studios.
