The EXAF-JFD project receives an award in Tanzania

Two publications resulting from research supported by the EXAF-JFD project have received the 2023/2024 Research Excellence Award from the Tanzanian Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST). This national recognition highlights the quality of the work carried out in the field of sustainable energy.
Two publications to which Prof. Thomas Kivevele, Principal Investigator of the EXAF-JFD project, and Prof. Baraka Kichonge, a postdoctoral researcher supported by the project, contributed are among the works honoured this year. Each publication received a prize worth 50 million Tanzanian shillings (TZS).
The first paper, published in *Bioresource Technology*, focuses on the conversion of orange peel into biocrude via solvothermal liquefaction and examines the influence of process parameters on the yield and energy composition of the resulting product. The second, published in *Energy*, presents a technical and economic assessment of various transesterification processes for the production of biodiesel from low-quality, non-edible feedstocks.
ese two awards highlight research that explores innovative solutions in the field of renewable energy and resource utilisation, whilst addressing specific challenges facing African energy systems. They also demonstrate the quality of the scientific work carried out as part of the EXAF-JFD project and the importance of collaboration between researchers, institutions and partners.
