The first edition of the 100 PhDs for Africa Summer School, organised on the campus of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguerir, came to a close in an atmosphere that was both studious and convivial. For five days, 23 of the programme's beneficiaries from across the continent took part in a series of training courses, conferences and workshops focusing on research, innovation and scientific impact in Africa.
A week of intense training
From the very first day, participants were immersed in key themes: scientific entrepreneurship, intellectual property, academic writing and research methodology. The following days were marked by sessions on artificial intelligence, data science, scientific ethics and popularising research.
Meeting with the innovation ecosystem
The Summer School also coincided with the IRIS Conference, organised by the Ibn Rochd Foundation, giving PhD students the opportunity to discuss AI, innovation and economic development in Africa with leading experts from MIT, McGill, Columbia and UM6P.
Doctoral students in the spotlight
Two interview sessions enabled a number of participants to talk about their careers and the impact of the programme on their research. This was a way of highlighting the diversity of profiles and the commitment of a new generation of African researchers to tackling the major challenges facing the continent.
A convivial closing
The presentation of the certificates, followed by a visit to the laboratory and a relaxing evening, marked the end of an intense week that was both instructive and unifying.
