Synthetic biology for the thermal insulation of buildings

For the iGEM competition, which will take place from 26 to 28 October 2022 in Paris, the interdisciplinary team from EPFL is presenting HESTIA, a solution for the sustainable insulation of buildings.
The iGEM, or International Genetically Engineered Machine competition, is an international synthetic biology competition organised every year. EPFL has been taking part since 2008 with teams essentially composed of students in the Life Sciences, often associated with other disciplines of the school.
This year, the EPFL iGEM team includes an architecture student for the first time. The project submitted to the competition is closely related to the concerns of the construction sector, since it consists of a sustainable solution for biosourced insulation, called HESTIA (Hydrophobic E.coli based Sustainable Thermally Insulative Aerogel).
Convinced of the potential of their project, we wish the EPFL iGEM team the best of luck!
