Successful graduation for the first E4S Master cohort

In a heartwarming celebration of academic accomplishment, the first cohort of the Master in Sustainable Management & Technology (SMT) celebrated their graduation at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) on October 7th, 2023.

This pioneering program, offered jointly by three esteemed institutions – UNIL, IMD and EPFL, witnessed a remarkable moment as graduating students became alumni of all three institutions, cementing their legacy as leaders in sustainable education.

The graduation ceremony began with an inspiring address by Jean-Pierre Danthine, founder of the Enterprise For Society Center (E4S), a research and action tankestablished in 2019 and dedicated toinspiring and activating the transition to a resilient and inclusive economy within planetary boundaries.. Reflecting on the center's mission, Prof. Danthine expressed profound emotions and pride witnessing the first cohort graduate. He underscored the urgency and responsibility behind the creation of the center and its Master's program, emphasizing the critical role these graduates will play in shaping a sustainable future.

Co-directors Prof. Oliver Gallay and Prof. Arnaud Chevallier further shared insightful perspectives, highlighting the significance of the graduates' role in the evolving landscape of sustainable management and technology.

During the ceremony, the following student and academic staff received the SMT Excellence Awards for their outstanding achievements over the year:

  • Boris Thurm: Best Teaching Assistant Award
  • Jasmina Djordjevic: Award for Academic Excellence

The vibrant atmosphere during the ceremony was a testament to the students' extraordinary dedication and mutual support, exemplifying their commitment to driving change. Caroline Perrot, SMT Program Deputy, received a heartfelt standing ovation from the studentsin recognition of her untiring support during their studies.

Julien Sémelin, Head of Environment Investments at Cartier for Nature, delivered a compelling address, urging graduates to embrace their role as change-makers in these critical times. His advice centered on patience, learning the language of nature, perseverance, and emphasizing the importance of communication and adaptability.

The ceremony concluded on an energetic and memorable finale as E4S’ Co-Managing Director Prof. Jean-Philippe Bonardi, dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi, delivered final remarks, his laughter resonating throughout the hall as he encouraged the graduates to embark on their journeys with resilience and adaptability. It was a graduation ceremony unlike any other, instilled with a sense of purpose and a commitment to a sustainable future.
