Study trip in the Grand Paris metropolis

Prof. Emmanuel Rey's studio class went on a study trip to the metropolis of the Grand Paris. This extra-mural teaching activity was an opportunity for the students to visit various contemporary projects of housing, activity building and public space coming into close resonance with the themes and issues explored in the SUBURBAN LANDSCAPE studio.

Architectural design is expected to play an important part in the search for alternatives to reorient urban development through densification strategies. By an approach at different scales, LAST's studio aims precisely at analyzing, exploring and experimenting specific issues to this contribution of architecture to the sustainable urban development.

It is in this spirit that the study trip to the Grand Paris metropolis was conceived, with the objective to allow the students to enhance their reference palette. It was thus the opportunity to visit many emblematic realizations, notably the "Viaduc des Arts" and the "Canopée" under construction by Patrick Berger, the "Halle Pajol" recently transformed by Jourda Architectes, the Eole gardens conceived by Michel Corajoud, the artistic creation center "Cent Quatre" realized by Atelier Novembre, housing in the ZAC Clichy Batignoles recently achieved by LAN, the "Cité du Cinéma" realized by Reichen & Robert in Saint-Denis and the "Villa Savoye" conceived by Le Corbusier in Poissy.

A presentation on the urban development in the "Pavillon de l’Arsenal" and lectures of Béatrice Mariole on the Grand Paris and Marc Warnery on industrial heritage conversion helped to put into perspective issues of conceptual coherence, built morphology, spatiality, typology and expression with broader themes related to the urban mutation processes, which the majority of European metropolis have to face today.
