International Conference on Structures and Architecture – ICSA 2019, July 24-26, 2019 - Lisbon

The Structural Xploration Lab is taking part at this year’s International Conference on Structures and Architecture – ICSA 2019, held in Lisbon from July 24th to 26th, 2019.

With her paper and presentation, Catherine De Wolf is trying to answer the question: Can timber lower the environmental impacts of tall buildings? Catherine’s paper reviews current projects and assesses their environmental impact.

Jan Brütting will be presenting his work on the Exploration of spatial structures made from reused elements and the design of optimal kits of parts. This paper presents structural optimization techniques: 1) for the design of multiple spatial structures from one stock of elements, and 2) for the synthesis of an optimal stock or kit-of-parts whose elements can be used in multiple structures.

Jan will also present the outcomes of a collaborative research project between ARUP San Francisco, MIT, and EPFL, which seeks to characterize the structural behavior of traditional wood joinery connections via experimental and analytical methods.
