The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is preparing for possible funding adjustments, as the Federal Council plans to reduce its budget by 10% in 2027 and 11% in 2028. While Parliament’s decision is expected next year, the SNSF must act early due to its multi-year project commitments, with funding decisions made in 2026 affecting research through 2030.
Funding program changes taking effect in 2026
Programs to be suspended:
The SPARK funding scheme for novel and unconventional ideas (paused until at least the end of 2027).
The SPIRIT program for promoting team-oriented cross-border research will be paused through 2028.
The implementation networks for strengthening interactions between researchers and non-scientific actors will not be continued after their pilot phase.
New calls for COST projects for supporting work conducted in Switzerland in the frame of the COST Actions will be paused. Switzerland will continue to participate in the international COST Actions.
Programs impacted by budget cuts:
European Partnerships’ budget will be reduced by 25%.
Fewer applications will be approved for the SNSF's main funding scheme Project funding and for Career funding than at present. From 2026 to 2028, the Research Council will determine the extent of these cuts annually, based on Parliament’s budget decisions made at the end of each year.
