SNSF Project Funding: Extension of the grant duration

If you are considering requesting a cost-neutral extension for your SNSF-funded project, we would like to draw your attention to several important rules and conditions defined under sections 5.4 and 7.6 in "General implementation regulations for the Funding Regulations" from February 2026.
In addition to the original valid grounds (1–5), the SNSF has now introduced item 6 below as an important additional criterion for granting extensions.
Valid Grounds for Extension are now as follows:
- Maternity, paternity, parental or adoption leave (including leave for the “other parent”)
- Incapacity to work due to illness or accident
- Care obligations
- Service to the general public (e.g. military or civilian service)
- Further education (e.g. internships or clinical activities)
- Justified delays in recruiting doctoral students that prevent timely completion of the dissertation
Min. Duration of Delay: Only delays of at least two consecutive months are considered eligible.
Max. Extension Period: Extensions are granted for a max. of 12 months per request.
Supplementary Grants: For extensions related to reasons (points 1–4), it is possible to request a supplementary grant.
Practical Advice Before Applying :
- Clearly document and justify the reason for the delay by referring specifically to one of the six valid grounds listed above. Other reasons may not be accepted.
- Ensure the delay meets the minimum duration requirement.
- Submit your request as early as possible.
- Indicate whether you are also applying for a supplementary grant.
