LEV Engages with the Public at EPFL’s Sciencetastic Science Fair

On November 8th and 9th, the Laboratory of Environmental Virology (LEV) had the exciting opportunity to share its research with several hundred members of the public at EPFL’s annual Sciencetastic Science Fair, an event designed to promote curiosity about science, especially among children.

At the LEV booth, visitors were invited to learn about the fascinating world of microbes found in water through a variety of interactive activities. Highlights included an experiment that demonstrated how chlorine inactivates bacteria, a microscope station revealing a vibrant ecosystem of microscopic organisms in local lake water, and creative activities such as virus-shaped origami and coloring pages featuring informative depictions of viruses. These engaging activities not only entertained but also educated attendees about the vital role microbes play in our aquatic ecosystems.

Both children and adults interacted with LEV staff and students, posing thoughtful questions about the lab's research and its real-world applications in ensuring lake water remains clean and safe. The exchange sparked lively discussions, helping to bridge the gap between scientific research and everyday life.

LEV extends its thanks to all the attendees of Sciencetastic 2024. A special acknowledgment goes to the organizers for fostering a space where science meets the public in a fun and accessible way!
