Dr. Sarah Crosby joined HOBEL in March 2023 as a postdoctoral researcher. She received her PhD degree from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Before joining HOBEL, Sarah worked as a research assistant at the Building Decisions Research Group (BDRG) at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Crosby’s research focuses on Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), occupants’ thermal comfort and the interrelationships between them.

Through her recent work, she developed a novel methodology aimed at advancing the precision of thermal comfort predictions. Dr. Crosby’s findings suggest that the integration of indoor CO2 levels can improve the accuracy of thermal comfort predictions. Additionally, her research found that ventilation rates can be increased with minimal building energy demand increase while keeping thermal comfort maintained, an important challenge to building managers in a post-COVID-19 world.

In HOBEL, Sarah is leading the EPFL side of an EU-funded project along with other industrial, academic, and research partners. The project aims to advance the knowledge of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) assessment in residential and educational buildings in Europe, develop improved metrics for IEQ assessment in current credit schemes and building codes, and understand the impact of building retrofits on Indoor environmental quality."
