Sandro Carrara wins IEEE Sensors Letters Best Paper Award

Sandro Carrara, head of the Bio/CMOS Interfaces Laboratory in the School of Engineering, has won the IEEE Sensors Letters Best Paper Award with collaborators from the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
The IEEE Sensors Letters Best Paper Award is awarded by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Sensors Council. It is awarded to the best papers published in the IEEE Sensors Letters during the past year based on quality, originality, contributions, subject matter, and timeliness. Winners receive a certificate and $2,000 split equally among the authors.
This year, Sandro Carrara has received the award, along with colleagues in the Bio/CMOS Interfaces Laboratory in Neuchatel and at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy, for the paper, "Flexible Sensor and Readout Circuitry for Continuous Ion Sensing in Sweat". In this work, the researchers present a custom-designed and flexible readout circuitry for the characterization of flexible biosensors for detecting ammonium – a key metabolic biomarker – in sweat. The work describes a first working prototype demonstrating the feasibility of a holistic approach in which sensors and circuitry are fabricated using the same flexible substrate.
