On November 25, the Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship Institute (MTEI) organized its inaugural annual Research Day for students.

Eleven advanced students in the Doctoral Program in Management of Technology (EDMT), from their second year onwards, took the opportunity to present in a joint workshop with six MTEI faculty members. Their presentations, which included a motivation, the research questions, the methodology, results obtained thus far, and expected future results, were met with lively feedback from the professors and their peers. The director of the EDMT, Prof. Dominique Foray, explains: “Such an event is crucial for PhD students. It puts them in a position to both give and receive detailed feedback in an informal but possibly stressful setting. For many this is the first time in such a conference situation, which is an essential piece of their preparation for a successful career in research.” Andreas von Vangerow, PhD student's representative adds "The implementation of a culture of academic exchange that goes beyond the boundaries of a chair is worthwhile developing. “

Moreover, the workshop also allowed students to hone their presentation skills by forcing them to condense their often long and involved research efforts into short and crisp pieces of information that can be related to other in the allotted 10 minutes of presentation time. A further 20 minutes was then available to defend the work through multiple rounds of questions, often short dialogues with members of the audience. The range of topics covered the entire scope of MTEI activities, with topics from financial supply chain management, via corporate environmental strategies and capabilities for service innovation, to the effects of communication channels and time management on workers’ creativity.

Proceedings of the MTEI Research Day 2011 have been made available to all participants and can be viewed in the institute office (ODY 1.16). It is planned to make the MTEI Research Day a regular annual event.
