Research and Doctoral Awards Ceremony 2024
Celebrating excellence and achievement: EPFL honors Doctoral Graduates and the Research and Doctoral Awards Laureates
This special event celebrated the remarkable achievements of the more than 400 doctoral graduates who completed their theses between November 2023 and November 2024 at EPFL along with nine exceptional researchers recognized with the EPFL Research and Doctorate Awards.
The ceremony took place on Thursday, 28 November 2023 at the EPFL Forum Rolex and provided a unique opportunity for graduates, faculty members, friends, family and prize donors to come together and celebrate this significant milestone.
The program was filled with memorable and inspiring moments, beginning with the presentation of the Research Awards by Andreas Mortensen, Associate Vice President for Research. The recipients of these prestigious awards included:
- Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Awards: Rishabh Iyer and Alireza Modirshanechi
- ABB Award: Stanislav Sergeev
- Gilbert Hausmann Award: Guilherme Migliato Marega
- Zeno Karl Schindler (ZKS) Award: Nils Rädecker
- University Latsis Award: Giulia Tagliabue
- Haenny Award: Dimitrios Terzis
The ceremony proceeded with the presentation of the EPFL Doctorate Awards by Annalisa Buffa, Associate Vice President for Postgraduate Education, honoring Seyed Mahmood Hamze-Ziabari and Samuel Mendes Leitão for their outstanding doctoral thesis.
A highlight of the event was the collective celebration of doctoral graduates, marking their transition to a new academic milestone. Graduates participated in the symbolic gesture of moving the tassel on their graduation caps from right to left, symbolizing their new status.
Pauline Franz, PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, delivered a speech on behalf of the graduates, sharing her thoughts and reflections during this special occasion.
The evening's keynote speaker, Samantha Anderson, EPFL Alumna and Co-Founder & CEO of DePoly, captivated the audience with her insights as a leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. A brief Q&A session followed, allowing attendees to engage directly with her.
The ceremony concluded with a lively aperitif accompanied by music from the EPFL Little Band, creating a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
The Doctoral School extends heartfelt congratulations to all doctoral graduates and to the laureates of the Research and Doctoral Awards for their outstanding accomplishments.
