QSE Assembly brings together EPFL faculty in quantum

On 23 May 2025, nearly 30 professors and researchers working in a variety of areas of quantum science and technology met to discuss the state of quantum research both at EPFL and in nationally. The meeting also addressed funding, education, and community feedback for the QSE Center.
Participants represented all three associated Schools—IC, SB, and STI—as well as the Associate Vice Presidency for Centers and Platforms (AVP-CP) and the EPFL Research Office (ReO). The lunchtime meeting opened with a presentation by QSE Center executive director Philippe Caroff and academic director Vincenzo Savona. As part of the presentation, they emphasized the Center’s inclusive approach, noting that it welcomes anyone working in the field of quantum who wishes to engage with Center activities.
“If you are interested in quantum, then to us, you are part of our quantum community,” said Caroff.
The Assembly also covered internal and external funding opportunities, including a presentation by Thomas Vidick, professor at IC and a member of the Swiss Quantum Commission, about the Swiss Quantum Initiative’s call for TRL-enhancing initiatives. Vidick was able to answer participants’ questions and gathered feedback to share with the SQI.
Educational opportunities in quantum at were also presented by Daniele Mari, a professor at SB, including the ongoing work to create MAKE projects for quantum computing and quantum sensing, which will be done in collaboration with Clément Javérzac of FHNW.
The agenda also featured highlights of collaborative research highlights from the EPFL quantum community and explored the possibility of an industry-affiliated program in quantum.
“We were very pleased that so many professors and group leaders took the time from their busy schedules to join this Assembly. Their presence reflects a strong interest in shaping the mission and direction of the QSE Center,” says Caroff. “It is vital for our Center to get feedback from our community, and we look forward to holding another Assembly to continue this dialogue during the fall semester.”
