Publication of MAP 2012

The Students' Association of the Section of Architecture (ASAR) publishes a book containing all the Master of architecture projects made at EPFL in 2012. Entitled MAP 12, this publication enables to discover a hundred or so projects undertaken by the master students, together with numerous texts written by professors and lecturers of the section.

At EPFL, students in architecture are free to choose their master project subject, as much in terms of the theme as in the program and the site. The projects presented in MAP 12 thus reveal the wide range of territorial, urban and architectural issues addressed during the work. The book is in this sense representative of the many explorative fields covered by the teaching and research developed by the different laboratories involved.

Written by Andrea Bassi, Stefan Behnisch, Jean-Claude Bolay, Jacques Lévy, Jacques Lucan, Valérie November, Yves Pedrazzini, Emmanuel Rey and Monique Ruzicka-Rossier, nine thematic texts underline this polymorphic aspect. In his part entitled "Towards sustainable architecture", Prof. Emmanuel Rey, from the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) focused more specifically on the integration of sustainability issues in architecture.

"Discovering a disused urban site, imagining new ways of living or working, recovering ignored railway wastelands, integrating interdisciplinary inputs, transposing technological innovations or revisiting construction methods are all ways of demonstrating, more or less explicitly, that far from being a constraint, sustainability issues constitute a real raw material for the architect. Although he works more and more in already built cities, many sectors can still be explored amongst all the territories of density" underlined in particular Professor Rey.

MAP 12 is available in the bookshops La Fonaine at the EPFL Rolex Learning Center, Payot in Lausanne, Archigraphy in Geneva and Hochparterre in Zurich or directly from ASAR ([email protected]).
