Projections of documentary films made in EPFL

EPFL Library invites you on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, from 5PM in MED 2 1522, to watch documentary movies made by members of the EPFL community.
How can we define the notion of documentary films? What are the interactions between research, teaching and film production in a scientific and academic context? What are the links between EPFL and documentary cinema? Olivier Zuchuat, a physicist trained at EPFL, filmmaker, editor and interim head of the Département Cinéma/cinéma du réel à la Haute école d’art et de design (HEAD) de Genève, will answer these questions with three directors whose documentary films will be screened during the evening.

Blue Barrier, by Farzaneh Bahrami and Tara Kaboli (Switzerland, Italy, Iran, 2018, 40', English VO, English ST) - Film projeté abréjé
Synopsis: The 11-kilometer elevated urban highway of Sadr in Tehran was inaugurated in 2013, presented and celebrated by the official media as "the most prestigious production of Iranian engineering", as a "work of art embodied in concrete". According to the official statistics, the cost of Sadr could have financed 43 kilometers of underground metro -that is one third of the city's existing metro network. Blue Barrier reconstructs the story of this urban highway, looking into the interplay of the city's form and its forms of inhabiting, questioning to what extent the city is the outcome of its inhabitants actions and/or inactions. Mamama, de Vincent Lestang (Suisse, 2018, 15'11, VO français) Synopsis: Mamama a 90 ans, 8 enfants et 19 petits-enfants. Elle vit dans un village reculé d'Alsace en quasi-autarcie, y appliquant les gestes et techniques façonnés par l'histoire de sa vie. Témoignage poignant d'une femme qui, malgré son existence anachronique, fait écho à des problématiques majeures de notre quotidien. Ce film transmet la mémoire et l'héritage de ces populations rurales, qui portent encore les stigmates de la grande Histoire.
Poids-Lourd, de Arnaud Andrier et Simon Cristiano (Suisse, 2018, 10'39, VO français, anglais, italien, ST français). Synopsis: L’aire d’autoroute est par essence un point d’orgue de tout trajet sur la route. Mais cet environnement est aussi une excroissance du lieu de travail des chauffeurs poids-lourds, qui, lorsqu’ils ouvrent la porte de leur véhicule à l’arrêt, agrandissent soudainement l’espace dans lequel ils sont d’ordinaire confinés. Ce film propose un voyage où un visiteur s'immisce dans l'atmosphère aire-d'autoroutière et rencontre les protagonistes qui l'habitent.
La route... chez moi, de Mohamed Bahaeddine Ferchichi (Tunisie, 2018, 14', VO Arabe, ST français). Synopsis: Saillant un décalage entre l'atypie et la stéréotypie d'un jeune tunisien, ce court métrage dresse le portrait d'un dépanneur-auto. Pendant quelques minutes, vous accompagnerez le protagoniste dans un voyage guidé par les péripéties de la route, rythmé par le rugissement des moteurs et tourné par le biais d'un smartphone.
