Professor Dimitrios Lignos, Full Professor and Department Chair at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), has been honoured with the prestigious J.M. Ko Award.
Prof. Lignos was honoured for transformative contributions to earthquake engineering, advancing the seismic performance of steel structures through pioneering models that capture strength and stiffness deterioration along with advanced experimention across scales. His work on structural steel systems along with methods to predict the risk of structural collapse has reshaped performance-based design and is directly influencing major international standards, including Eurocode 8, AISC, and ASCE 41.
The J.M Ko award has been established by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to recognize exceptional young researchers (aged 45 or under) worldwide who have made outstanding contributions of high originality and lasting importance to the science and technology of structural engineering.
The award is named in honor of Professor Jan-Ming Ko, the first Chair Professor of Structural Engineering at PolyU. The 2025 laureates were announced in early 2026. Prof. Lignos will be invited to visit the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to receive the award certificate and medal and to deliver the J.M. Ko Distinguished Lecture in Hong Kong or a city in the Greater Bay Area.
