International conference organised by the South African Planning Institute from 14 – 17 October 2018 to which Jean-Claude Bolay, CODEV director and ENAC adjunct professor, was invited as keynote speaker, addressing planning practice in African cities.

Talking about medium-sized cities of countries of the Global South and focussing on the recently published study of the city of Koudougou in Burkina Faso, he endeavoured to convince his audience - hundreds of professionals and scientists mainly from Southern and English-speaking Africa - that the modernisation of the African city must first and foremost incorporate coherent actions to fight poverty, urban planning that targets the inclusion of disadvantaged districts, and access to basic services for all. You must bear in mind that 50 to 80% of African city-dwellers are deemed to be poor and that the urban authorities of small and medium-sized cities are desperately short of both human and financial resources to seriously consider planning their future.
