Phone-locking pouches to work without distractions

Having a smartphone nearby can reduce one’s ability to concentrate, even without using it. To support students during their work sessions, the EPFL Library now offers phone-locking pouches, available for loan.
Research in cognitive science, particularly the study “Brain Drain: The Mere Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity” (Ward et al., 2017), shows that the mere presence of a smartphone occupies part of our attention. This reduces the cognitive resources available, especially for working memory, reasoning, and problem‑solving. This effect is observed even when the phone is switched off, with no notifications, and without any active use. Cognitive performance, however, is better when the smartphone is physically distant, for example placed in another room.
Why keep your smartphone away to study better?
- Enhanced concentration
Keeping the smartphone at a distance reduces attentional demands, even unconscious ones, and helps you stay fully focused on the task at hand.
- Optimized cognitive abilities
By freeing up mental resources, the brain can better mobilize memory, reasoning, and problem‑solving skills.
- More efficient and sustainable work
Tasks are completed more quickly, with fewer errors and reduced mental fatigue.
A simple solution offered by the Library
In an academic context where concentration is essential (reviewing material, writing projects, preparing for exams) this impact, though often invisible, can make a real difference. With this in mind, the EPFL Library is expanding its range of items available for loan with phone-locking pouches. Easy to use, they allow you to store your phone out of sight during a work session, while still keeping it within reach if needed.
How does it work?
- Borrow a lockable pouch at the desk
- Place your smartphone (in silent mode) inside the pouch
- Lock the pouch and keep your phone with you, without distractions!
- Come back to the desk to unlock and return the pouch.
