PhD student in Remote Sensing of Aquatic Primary Production

The position will use automated in situ measurements from research platforms in Lake Geneva (Switzerland/France) and Greifensee (Switzerland), hyperspectral airborne and satellite data to de-velop new techniques for the estimation of primary production in lakes. Possible research questions that can be addressed relate to i) the acquisition and utilization of ground measurements as ancillary and validation data, ii) the development of new methods and algorithms for hyperspectral data, or iii) the up-scaling and validation of such methods to regional and national scale.
The successful applicant will be based at Eawag in Dübendorf and will be supported through col-laborations with research groups within the department (www.eawag.ch/en/ department/SURF/), the nearby University of Zürich (www.geo.uzh.ch/en/units/rsws) and collaborators at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), the Universities of Stirling, Scotland, and Tartu, Estonia. He or she will benefit from a highly interdisciplinary research environment in the larger Zurich area.
We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent person with a passion for science and willing to work in an interdisciplinary team. Upon start, the applicant must have a completed master’s degree in remote sensing, environmental science, physics, engineering, or any related field. Applicants must be able to pursue data-oriented computational research as well as experi-mental approaches and field work. A good standard of written and spoken English is required. The position starts as of 1 June 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and is limited to four years.
