Persuasive Grant Writing: self-learning e-course for EPFL researchers

Whether you’re working on your first grant or already have several years of experience, writing a convincing proposal is not an easy task. This self-paced interactive e-course provides useful advice and practical steps on how to get started, but also how to improve the quality of your research proposal by using narrative tools.
The course consists of a series of videos with lectures by EPFL grant coaches, science communication specialists and interviews with professors. In addition, self-tests and exercises will help strengthen your grant writing skills and increase confidence to write convincing proposals. Primarily intended for new incoming professors and young researchers, but also open to anyone involved in grant writing, this e-course allows you to go at your own pace, giving you control over your workload and making it easy to understand. The total time to complete will be ~60min.
The course comprises three modules, focused on the research section crafting of a proposal:
1) How to get started,
2) How to write a persuasive narrative,
3) How to create a complete proposal.
Guidance and examples provided apply to a wide range of funding schemes. The learning objectives are to:
- Understand the need to tailor your research proposal to your funders’ aims and your target audience,
- Outline an ideal timeline for your grant preparation,
- Know the common reasons why grant proposals are not funded,
- Explain narrative tools to apply when writing your grant application,
- Learn how to use these narrative tools to improve your grant proposal, and
- Recognize the need to create a clear implementation plan, risk assessment and impact section of your proposal
