Paolo Perona appointed academic director of the Hydraulic Platform

In January 2022, Paolo Perona will take over the academic direction of the Hydraulic Platform of ENAC, alongside the present operational director, G. De Cesare.

Paolo Perona studied mechanical engineering at Politecnico di Torino (I), is a professionally registered engineer and habilitated professor of hydraulic engineering. He obtained his PhD in hydraulic engineering in 2001 from Politecnico di Milano (I). He joined ETH Zurich in 2003 as research fellow (Oberassistant) and EPFL in 2010 as SNSF assistant professor. In 2015, Paolo Perona became full professor and Chair of Environmental Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, UK, where he also served as Head of the Research Institute for Infrastructure and Environment until 2020. Paolo Perona currently shares a triple appointment as visiting senior scientist at EPFL, as visiting professor at The University of Edinburgh (UK) and as project manager at HOLINGER Ag. Perona’s research is experimental and analytical, focusing at the mathematical modelling of the ecohydraulics and morphodynamics of water systems and related importance for sustainable hydropower planning. He has a long-standing teaching experience; he supervised or co-supervised 16 PhD theses, and authored and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. Since 2018 he serves as chief editor for Water and Wastewater Management, a specialty session of Frontiers in Environmental Sciences. In January 2022, he will take over the academic direction of the hydraulic platform within the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC).
