NUMED 2018, a landmark first edition!

On June 21-22, 2018 took place the first edition of Numed, an international conference organised by the Université Virtuelle du Sénégal (UVS), the École Supérieure Polytechnique de Dakar (ESP), the Université Gaston Berger (UGB) de Saint-Louis and the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, in collaboration with the Network of Excellence in Engineering Sciences of the French-speaking Community (RESCIF) - a consortium dedicated to innovation and development. The event took place place in UCAD's (Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar) auditorium and in UVS's Espaces Numériques Ouverts (ENO) or 'open digital spaces'. The theme were: “Digital-era learning in higher education in Francophone Africa: a look at where we are today, the challenges ahead and tomorrow’s prospects .”
Professor Mary Teuw Niane, Minister of Higher Education and Research & Innovation led the conference, which was designed to bring together key players in the digital education sector. The objective was to examine MOOCs and educational resources in higher education in an environment dedicated to sharing experiences, best practices, knowledge and the new opportunities created by digital education. Actors coordinated their efforts to create and diffuse courses on a regional and continental scale. They also presented key institutional reforms that foster digital use.
For two days, the presentations and debates focused on:
• policies on digital-age learning in higher education;
• open education resources (OER);
• using web 2.0 technologies for teaching and learning;
• institutional policies on digital education;
• financing digital education in Africa;
• continuing education and vocational training.
Numed addresses a broad audience that is interested in adopting information and communication technologies (ICT) for education and research purposes, including universities, research and training institutes, scientists and students.
The conference was held at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar. Closing discussions explored how to develop a road map for promoting and using MOOCs and OERs in Africa.
