Elias Merhi, PhD student
My name is Elias Merhi and I grew up in Beirut (Lebanon). From an early age, I developed an interest in the growing infrastructures that had been built around the world and in my neighborhood. I have been fascinated by the different imposing structures that shape our society as well as the challenges they embody.
In 2016, I moved to Switzerland to study civil engineering at EPFL. While studying for my Bachelor's and Master's degrees, I realized the tremendous responsibility civil engineers carry. Additionally, I became aware of the huge technical and environmental challenges arising from the vast number of structures built worldwide.
I chose to pursue a PhD related to the assessment of concrete structures. Indeed, extending the service life of such structures and gaining a better understanding of their behavior is an enormous undertaking, and I'd love to be a part of it.
Besides my passion for structures, I also enjoy traveling and exploring new cultures and places. When I have free time, I enjoy hiking with some friends or playing basketball. Whenever I want to relax, I enjoy reading a book or watching a series.
I am a person that loves to always have something to do and that tries to enjoy and make the most of each day
