New: training programs and credited course for the EPFL community

CC BY-NC-SA EPFL Library
The Library is expanding its services by offering two new training programs for the EPFL community: “Ethics in Data Management: Anonymization and Sustainability Practices” and “Reshaping Information Research with AI”, as well as a new credited course for doctoral students: “Research skills in the Open Science Era”.
Training program: "Ethics in Data Management: Anonymization and Sustainability Practices"
Ethical considerations in research data management are crucial for maintaining research integrity, protecting privacy, and ensuring sustainable data practices. This course explores the principles and practices of ethical data management, emphasizing the importance of data anonymization techniques and sustainable management strategies. Participants will learn to navigate complex legal, ethical, and social dimensions of managing research data while ensuring compliance with data protection laws and fostering trust in research outputs. Through interactive discussions and case studies, participants will learn to:
- Address ethical challenges in data collection and management, including compliance with GDPR and Swiss data laws, and apply anonymization techniques to protect subject privacy.
- Implement sustainable data practices and leverage EPFL’s resources to enhance ethical and legal compliance in research workflows.
Next session: Thursday, April 10, 2025 – 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM – CO 121 | Register here
Training program: "Reshaping Information Research with AI"
In the last few years, many AI-powered tools promise to change forever the way we look for information. During this workshop, we will explore some of them, focusing on the so-called "research assistants" in order to understand how they work and how we can exploit them to make our research better. After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the main challenges brought by AI to the information retrieval.
- Compare 4 AI-powered research assistants.
- Recognize the main difference with the traditional information retrieval strategy.
Next session: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 – 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM – CO 121 [FULL] | Join the waiting list
Credited course: "Research Skills in the Open Science Era"
This new course (2 credits) is designed to explore the landscape of modern research tools and practices. Doctoral students will gain insights into principles of Open Science, smart information retrieval, ethical publishing, coding best practices, and comprehensive research data management.
This course is co-organized by the Library and ENAC. The credits count towards the transversal skills credits. Learning outcomes:
- Develop the appropriate skills to support Open Science compliant dissemination and re-use of scientific output
- Formulate a search strategy for his/her own PhD output (tool selection, search query design, literature monitoring)
- Determine the consequences of intellectual property laws in the re-use of scientific information and content
- Design Open-Source compliant software to be used in research
- Identify and apply RDM good practices and FAIR principles
