Prof. Dominique Foray and Dr. Fabiana Visentin have been awarded a grant by SNF to study the role of supervisors on PhD students’ outcomes.

Prof. Dominique Foray and Dr. Fabiana Visentin have been awarded a Swiss National Science Foundation research grant to study how supervisors affect their students’ productivity and career perspectives.

PhD students are critical inputs in the production of knowledge and innovation. They are not only responsible for a considerable proportion of the research articles and patents produced in academia but also play an important role in knowledge dissemination when they move into the labor market. Economics and the innovation literature have discussed the determinants of their scientific productivity and career choices. However, surprisingly little is known about the role of supervisors on their outcomes. This study aims to contribute to filling this gap by investigating two specific aspects: (i) the impact of supervisor networks on PhD student research output; (ii) the effect of supervisors’ involvement in industry on students’ careers.

The study will be conducted within the context of two Federal Institutes of Technology, EPFL (Lausanne) and ETH (Zurich) and Chalmers University of Technology (CUT) in Sweden.

The project will be carried out within the Chair in Economics and Management of Innovation (CEMI). Professor Dominique Foray will be in charge of coordinating the activities of the project team, which includes a post-doctoral fellow, Fabiana Visentin, and a doctoral student, Stefano H. Baruffaldi. Moreover, the project will benefit from the contribution of three international collaborators: Professor Paula Stephan, Professor Jacques Mairesse and Professor Annamaria Conti.
