In “An epigenetic toolbox to remember - from cellular to fear memories” Davide and Johannes argue that to store behavioral memories, the brain employs similar tools than to store cellular memories!

The review, published in ScienceDirect, is available here.

Highlights:

  • Mnemonic processes impact the epigenetic landscape, not only synapse activity.
  • Fear memory affects DNA methylation, histone modifications, and chromatin structure.
  • Learning-induced epigenetic modifications are rapidly instated and long-lasting.
  • Memory may co-opt epigenetic mechanisms of cellular identity formation in development.
  • Causality between locus-specific epigenetic states and memory needs to be established.
