New report on risk of misuse of life science research
Research in life sciences produces knowledge and technologies to the benefit of humanity and the environment. However, certain discoveries can become dangerous when misused out of ill intent.
The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences recently published a report on how to address the risk of misuse of biological research. The report carries the title ‘Misuse potential and biosecurity in life sciences research’.
The report provides a basis for further discussion among scientists on the risks of possible life science research misuse. It is the result of workshops that were held with life scientists from Swiss academic institutions on ways of addressing the misuse potential of biological research.
The report draws the attention to six issues that should be considered when designing, conducting, and communicating research projects and it also provides examples.
The document supports scientists to reinforce their commitment to conduct research responsibly and to encourage others to do the same. To download the publication, click here.
