New Directors' Tandem Heading the EPFL's Institute of Bioengineering

Prof. Sylvie Roke (Director) and Prof. Matteo Dal Peraro (Associate Director) are the new tandem at the helm of the EPFL Institute of Bioengineering, for a four-year term starting February 1, 2021.
The Institute of Bioengineering (IBI) is thrilled to announce that Sylvie Roke, as its new Director, and Matteo Dal Peraro, as its new Associate Director, are the new tandem co-directing the IBI: they have started a four-year term in their new capacities on February 1, 2021.
Sylvie Roke, a Dutch national, holder of a double M.Sc. degree in Experimental Physics and in Chemistry obtained at Utrecht University (NL) in 2000, and of a Ph.D. in Natural Sciences obtained at Leiden University (NL) in 2004, has held research positions at Heidelberg University (D) and at the Max-Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart (D) before joining the EPFL's Institute of Bioengineering as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in 2011. Roke has been a tenured Associate Professor since 2015, and a Full Professor since 2020; she has served as the IBI's Associate Director from April 2018 till end 2020, in tandem with Andy Oates, who passed the Director's baton to her when he became EPFL Dean of Life Sciences on January 1, 2021. Sylvie Roke, holder of the Julia Jacobi Chair in Photomedicine, is affiliated to the School of Engineering and conducts her research as Head of the Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics (LBP). She has secondary affiliations in the Institute of Materials Science (IMX) and in the Lausanne Centre for Ultrafast Science (LACUS).
Matteo Dal Peraro, an Italian national, holder of an M.Sc. degree in Physics obtained at University of Padova (I) in 2000, and of a Ph.D. in Biophysics obtained at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste (I) in 2004, has held a postdoctoral research position at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA (USA) before joining the EPFL's Institute of Bioengineering as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in 2007, and becoming a tenured Associate Professor in 2014. Dal Peraro, who is affiliated to the School of Life Sciences, conducts his research as Head of the Laboratory for Biomolecular Modeling (LBM). He also holds a Group Leader position at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB).
