New article in Frontiers in Microbiology
Congratulations to Niels Burzan for his paper "Growth and persistence of an aerobic microbial community in Wyoming bentonite MX-80 despite anoxic in-situ conditions".
EML’s recent publication investigates the role of microorganisms in an important barrier system for high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. An in situ experiment in the Mont Terri Laboratory, Saint-Ursanne, Canton Jura, was performed to mimic the conditions expected in a Swiss repository for radioactive waste. We evaluated the microbiome in Wyoming bentonite when exposed to Opalinus Clay rock porewater over several years, by classical cultivation of microorganisms and by DNA extraction followed by Next-Generation Sequencing.
