Meet the ReO members! Episode 7 - Mariachiara Verde
Meet the ReO members! is a new series aimed at introducing the EPFL Research Office members. Meet Mariachiara Verde, Head of the National Funding Team, in the seventh episode!
How would you describe yourself in a few words?
My name is Mariachiara, I am the head of the National and non-for-profit funding team within the Research Office. I try to put all my energies and enthusiasm towards supporting EPFL laboratories in securing third-party funding.
What has been your career path?
After a Master in physics in Italy I moved to EPFL for a PhD in physical chemistry. At the end of the PhD, I decided to have look at the “dark other side”, i.e. the funders’ prospective and decided to do some work at the European Commission and later in a company doing project management for large collaborative European projects. I have been back at EPFL in the Research Office since 2012 and head of the NAT team since 2015.
What does a “Head of team, National & Non-Profit Funding” do at the EPFL Research Office?
In my daily job I coordinate the NAT team: 6 fantastic colleagues! As the name implies, our aim is to promote NATIONAL funding bodies and their funding opportunities (SNSF, Innosuisse, Federal Offices etc.) including Non-Profit entities, i.e. foundations. Within the team we also manage EPFL internal Awards and are responsible for the financial management of two NCCRs (Robotics and MARVEL).
What is driving you in your job?
I love scientific research, including its values and the impact it has on the advancement of our society. I like very much the idea that my team and I can support researchers to fulfill their missions.
What are the main challenges you are facing on a daily basis?
Oh là là, this is not an easy one. I believe that the most difficult part of my job is to try to always be up to date and ready to answer questions from the campus in such a ever-evolving Swiss research funding landscape!
Outside EPFL, what do you enjoy doing the most?
Swimming, but I must admit, NOT in the lake (my Mediterranean origin does not allow me to do so … at least for now :) ). I love spending time with my family and friends. Ah, and I listen to plenty of podcasts (Any recommendations? Let me know! :) )
What are your life and/or career aspirations?
I like a cooperative and friendly work environment like the one of the Research Office! It is important to me to see that my work has a purpose. I am eager to learn and open to the interesting daily challenges that my role currently offers me!
