Professor Martin Hairer, a mathematician at the EPFL School of Basic Sciences, has joined a global collaboration by the Simons Foundation that will work toward a unified probabilistic foundation for quantum field theory.

The Simons Foundation is a New York–based philanthropic organization founded in 1994 by mathematician and philanthropist Jim Simons and Marilyn Simons. Described as “a champion of basic science through grant funding, support for research and public engagement,” Simons is known for funding some of the most competitive and community-shaping awards in these fields.

The Simons Foundation has now launched a new round of its high-profile Simons Collaborations program, which includes Probabilistic Paths to Quantum Field Theory. Among the 14 Principal Investigators making up that collaboration is Professor Martin Hairer at EPFL’s School of Basic Sciences.

Professor Hairer holds the Chair of Probability and Partial Differential Equations within the Institute of Mathematics. His research covers stochastic partial differential equations, nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, stochastic differential equations, stochastic processes with memory, and the general theory of Markov processes.
