Marc Stevens wins the “van Marum Prize” 2013

Marc Stevens, co-advised by Prof. Arjen Lenstra, received the “van Marum Prize” 2013 for the best Dutch thesis.

The yearly "Martinus van Marum" Prize from The Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW) is an encouragement prize for researchers who received their PhD in the last 5 years in the area of Natural Sciences and Technology. The specific area awarded rotates between these 5 areas: exact sciences (math, physics, computer science, astrology); chemistry; life sciences and technology; environmental sciences; engineering sciences (air, space, navy, civil). The majority of the practical work reported in the awarded thesis was done on LACAL equipment (playstations).

Marc Stevens, received his PhD from from the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University in 2012 for his thesis on the cryptanalysis of widely cryptographic used hash functions. He was co-advised by Prof. Arjen Lenstra, the head of the Laboratory for Cryptologic Algorithms (LACAL), and Prof. Ronald Cramer from the Leiden University. Marc won the CRYPTO 2009 Best Paper Award together with his PhD supervisor and co-author Prof. Arjen Lenstra and others.
