Manos Karpathiotakis wins IBM Fellowship Award

Manos Karpathiotakis is the 2015-2016 winner of the prestigious IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Award.

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program is a worldwide competitive program, which honors exceptional PhD students who have an interest in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study.

Award recipients are selected on the basis of their overall potential for research excellence and their academic achievement thus far, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head.

Manos is from the Data Intensive Applications and Systems Lab headed by Professor Anastasia Ailamaki. His primary research is on database systems. His primary research is on data management. He specifically seeks to enable meaningful data analysis by removing the bottleneck of integrating and loading massive amounts of data in heterogeneous data formats into statically defined databases.
His work turns databases into dynamic entities of lightweight construction that are fully adaptable to queries and datasets, regardless of whether data is stored in a DBMS.
Static decisions are abolished. Instead optimized data access and manipulation primitives are defined at runtime using code generation.
His work thus offers unprecedented flexibility; it is the first to decouple the query language used from the original data layout and from the query runtime.
