LTS5 is part of the first exhibition of the new ArtLab building at EPFL, presenting « Noir c'est noir? Les Outrenoirs de Pierre Soulages ».

In collaboration with the EPFL+ECAL Lab and the startup Gamaya, LTS5 shows that hyperspectral imaging can be used to analyse the pigments of a painting, and ultimately recognize each type of pigment. It also shows that different parts of a painting reflect the multiple components of the visible and invisible light (ultra-violet and infrared) differently, depending on the pigment composition but also on the incident lighting and the observer orientation.

To illustrate this, the EPFL+Ecal lab has developed the concept of a dynamic wall, made of a multitude of small reflecting surfaces that illustrate the reflection of the light on Pierre Soulages’ pieces, subject to different illuminations and view points. It aims at illustrating the feeling of the light flux emanating from an art piece, even a black one.

The exhibition « Noir c'est noir? Les Outrenoirs de Pierre Soulages » is open in the ArtLab building at EPFL from Saturday November 5th, 206 to Sunday April 23rd, 2017.
