Our work on microsecond time-resolved cryo-EM has been highlighted by EPFL’s Center for Imaging.

In this short interview with EPFL’s Center for Imaging, Ulrich discusses our group’s recent work developing new time-resolved cryo-EM methods for observing fast protein dynamics. Our technique involves heating a cryo specimen with a laser beam so that it melts for a few microseconds (millions of a second). During this short period, proteins are able to move about freely in a liquid environment. When the laser is turned off, the sample rapidly refreezes. Trapped again in vitreous ice, the transient particle structures can be imaged with the transmission electron microscope.
