Let's go to the Esplanade!
As part of the renovation of the Coupole buildings, EPFL intends to create new classrooms with approximately 1,500 additional seats in the space currently under, around and above the Esplanade. We invite students, teachers and anyone interested to contribute their ideas and suggestions to this project.
The ultimate purpose of this brainstorming will be to answer the following questions:
- What kind of classroom would you like to study or teach in (what size, what slope, what format)?
- What kind of space would be a welcome addition in order to work outside the classroom?
- What kind of flow should there be around the Esplanade, the pedestrian hub of our campus?
- What new food services could be provided?
- The list of questions is endless... and your opinion counts!
This participatory approach will be carried out in two very short phases because the Confederation is imposing strict deadlines on us.
The first phase will consist of inviting all the people from our community who wish to participate to submit a poster with proposals, sketches or images of similar places that could inspire the architecture competition. This phase will take place as follows:
The first phase will consist of inviting all the people from our community who wish to participate to submit a poster with proposals, sketches or images of similar places that could inspire the architecture competition. This phase will take place as follows:
- April 11 at 18:00 in room Archizoom (SG 1211-1212): Presentation of the project in its current state and specification of expectations for the rendering.
- 4 May from 16:00 to 19:00 in room SG1: Informal sharing of initial ideas and search for convergence in what emerges.
- 19 May: Poster submission on the MIRO website (link provided later)
- 23 May from 16:00 to 19:00 in room SG1: Pooling of contributions and discussion with the project leaders.
The second phase will consist of forming a group of 15-20 students (teachers are also welcome) who will work for 3 weeks in August to translate the ideas from phase 1 (and new ones) into sketches of the future building. The group is to include architecture students, but we hope that members of any section of EPFL will participate. Participants will be paid on a summer internship basis and supervised by experts from the architecture section.
