EPFL School of Engineering's Microsystems Laboratory Director, Juergen Brugger, has been named the recipient of the 2022 MNE Fellow Award. This award recognizes outstanding researchers/engineers who made a significant advance in Micro- and Nanoengineering and related fields covered by the MNE conference.

To promote micro- and nano-engineering in Europe, the MNE Steering Committee recognizes a researcher or engineer every year who has made outstanding contributions to fields addressed by the MNE conference. The aim is to honor a researcher or engineer who has inspired the MNE community by his/her leadership or outstanding work. This could, for example, be through leadership in the successful development and commercialization of a technology, the pioneering of a method or development of a tool with significant impact on current research or manufacturing methods, or an outstanding invention.

J. Brugger has been invited to the MNE conference in Leuven/Belgium on September 19-23, 2022 for a plenary presentation. The presentation was centered on Emerging Micro and Nanofabrication using cleanroom techniques and emerging techniques, and also addressed related issues to education in micro and nanotechnology in the age of digital education. The talk presented the importance of process engineering for advancing the technology and maintaining expertise in important application fields in advanced device and system engineering, and stressed the importance of the availability of advanced infrastructure as well as trained scientific staff, engineers and students to further develop the necessary knowhow.

Prior to the presentation, J. Brugger was presented with the award by the chairperson of the MNE Fellow Award committee and a representative to the institution sponsoring the prize.

The Rules and Eligibility for the award are outlined below:

  • The nominee must have inspired and/or impacted the MNE community significantly. For example, the nominee’s work might have led to a widely used method or tool in the Micro- and Nanoengineering field.
  • The work recognized by the nomination must be of sufficient interest to be adequate for a plenary presentation.
  • The nominee must have strong research roots in Europe by having done a significant part of the research activities in Europe.
  • The nominee must be able to attend the next MNE conference, and agree to give a plenary talk.
